Cap'n Kyle passes on

Kyle Hunlock: 2004/05 Hurricanes Team MVP

This page is a tribute to our true friend and former team mate Kyle Hunlock.

Kyle, who played for the team in the 2004/2005 season, died on 22nd of June 2006 at Medical University of Ohio, USA, after sustaining serious head injuries in a fall from a roof.

In 2004, Kyle decided to spend a year as an exchange student at the University of Hertfordshire. Before arriving he had already made enquiries about the Hurricanes and was eager to play again the game he loved so much.

Kyle was an immediate success with the team. His previous experience in high school and his tough uncompromising style of play made him a standout during pre-season practice. So much so that he achieved a first in Hurricane history by being the only exchange student player ever to be chosen as a team captain.

'Cap'n Kyle', as he was known, always led by example on the field. He had an outstanding season for the Hurricanes and was a major part of the successes of the year. For his amazing contribution to the team on offense, defense and special teams Kyle was awarded Team Most Valuable Player for the 2004/2005 season.

As a special thank you and as a memento of his time with the team, he was also presented with his Hurricane game helmet to take back home to America.

Kyle's wonderfully warm personality made him a huge number of friends on the team and within the University at large. He maintained close contact with many and returned to England in 2006 to visit his friends, just weeks before his tragic accident.

In July 2006 a memorial service was held for Kyle in Hatfield, hometown of the University of Hertfordshire. Many team members and friends were in attendance and we honoured by the attendance of Kyle's wife, Kara, his parents, Carl and Diane and his Grandfather who all made the trip from America especially to share this time with us.

Rest in peace Kyle, you will ever be our friend.
